Digicel Foundation Partners with the UWI for a Lecture on Economics and Social Progress
Kingston, Jamaica – July 1, 2024 – The Digicel Foundation, in collaboration with The University of the West Indies (UWI)’s Centre for Entrepreneurship Thinking and Practice (CETP), held a thought-provoking and informative public lecture on "Economic Sustainability for Social Development" on July 1, 2024 at UWI’s Undercroft. This lecture, delivered by Director of the CETP at UWI’s Mona School of Business and Management Dr. K’adamawe K’Nife, explored the critical role of economic sustainability in fostering social development.
The discussion addressed the intersection of economics and social progress, highlighting innovative approaches and strategic thinking essential for sustainable development. Moderated by Miguel “Steppa” Williams, Director of Strategic Planning and Community Development at Digicel Foundation, audience members were engaged and posed a range of questions after the lecture.
Attendees also heard greetings from Ms. Charmaine Daniels, CEO of the Digicel Foundation. Ms. Daniels expressed thanks to UWI for their partnership on various projects over the years, especially in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). She noted that the goals and activities of the CETP in supporting social entrepreneurship align with those of Digicel Foundation, to “ensure that we have a more sustainable and equitable future.” She expressed her appreciation for the “true heroes” of the projects funded by the Digicel Foundation - the community members themselves.
Digicel Foundation is currently celebrating twenty years in Jamaica. To date, the Foundation has invested US$12 million in community-based projects, fostering a spirit of self-reliance through sustainable projects islandwide and impacting over 277,000 lives.
