Digicel's Women Leaders Encourage Girls to Excel in ICT and STEM Fields
Kingston, Jamaica - April 24, 2024 - In a world where technology is shaping every aspect of our lives, it iscrucial to ensure that all voices are heard and represented in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Recognising this need, Digicel Foundation has taken proactive steps to inspire and empower young girls across Jamaica by partnering with STEAMHouse to spearhead the Crea+Her Girls in ICT School Tour.
As part of a month-long Girls in ICT Day programme, women leaders from Digicel have been visiting high schools to convene mentorship and leadership sessions. This initiative seeks to ignite interest and passion in ICT among girls by encouraging them to pursue careers in this dynamic and rapidly evolving field.
Avryl Francis, Digicel Group's Security Operations Manager, underscored the significance of STEM in today's world and highlighted the growing demand for female perspectives in technological development. She said, “STEM is running the world right now. I recommend STEM fields for women because they need more female mindsets in the area. We need a lot of women thought processes in development.”
Meanwhile, speaking to girls from Mt. Alvernia High and Montego Bay High School for Girls, Joy Clark, Director of Corporate and Government Relations, Digicel Business, imparted valuable lessons to the girls on navigating challenges in male-dominated fields. Clark, a Digicel Foundation Board Director, emphasised the importance of finding one's voice. “Let me assure you that being a woman in tech is not a barrier; it is an opportunity. You may sometimes feel overlooked or overshadowed but remember that your perspective is invaluable. So, speak up, share your ideas and do not be afraid to assert yourself."
Other speakers included Sherika Watson, Senior ICT Consultant, Digicel Business; Antoinette Heirs, Voice Core Operations Manager, Digicel Group, and Rhenay Williams, Project Shapes Data Cleanse Lead, Digicel Group, who shared their expertise and encouraged the girls to pursue careers in ICT.
In line with this mission, the Digicel Foundation will continue to invest in initiatives that expose youths, especially girls, to emerging STEM and ICT-related careers. This year, in commemorating its 20th anniversary, the Foundation plans to establish 10 additional Smart Rooms in primary schools across the island, providing students with access to technology and opportunities for hands-on learning.
