Education
Improving Literacy and Access to Technology
At the Digicel Foundation, we are dedicated to building brighter futures by enhancing literacy and expanding access to technology in schools throughout Jamaica. Through innovative programmes and initiatives, we're empowering educators, students, and communities to embrace the transformative power of education.
Our Education portfolio is aligned with the United Nations' Social Development Goal to ensure that all girls and boys can access equitable and quality education.
Our journey began with the reconstruction of Lakes Pen Basic School in Lakes Pen, St. Catherine, marking the inception of the Digicel Foundation's initiatives. In collaboration with the community and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund, we turned this vision into reality, igniting hope and opportunity for generations to come.
Continuing our mission, we have forged lasting partnerships with communities, working hand in hand to enhance educational institutions at every level, from basic schools to universities. In 2009, we introduced our Enrichment Programme, aiming to boost literacy and numeracy levels across Jamaica. With a joint investment of USD$3.7 million alongside USAID, we established 231 Enrichment Rooms in primary schools nationwide, nurturing young minds and paving the way for a brighter future.
Our dedication to holistic education extends to fostering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning. To date, we have renovated 13 science labs and deployed 42 mobile science units, empowering students with hands-on experiences and sparking curiosity in the sciences.
Today, we embark on a new frontier: bridging the digital divide through our STEAM initiative. With the establishment of 21 Smart Rooms in primary schools across rural Jamaica, we are equipping students with essential digital skills and resources, empowering them to thrive in the digital age. Join us on this transformative journey as we strive to build a more inclusive and empowered future through education.

Full Steam Ahead!
Our STEAM Initiative (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is closing the digital gap in education while fostering digital literacy among students. Beginning in 2021, our Foundation embarked on a mission to revitalize spaces in Jamaican primary schools. To date, we have successfully implemented 11 Smart Rooms. Each room is outfitted with essential tools including laptops, tablets, a printer, a MIMIO-compatible smart touchscreen, and safety features such as a smart entry door lock with a camera system.
Students attending the St. Catherine-based Homestead Primary and Infant School are the latest to have access to a smartroom.
